Epworth Sleepiness Scale

What is the Epworth Sleepiness Scale?

  • It is intended to measure daytime sleepiness and is helpful in diagnosing sleep disorders.

What does it involve?

  • There are 8 questions relating to different situations where you might fall asleep.
  • Once you have scored each question the values are added together to give an indication of the severity of your symptoms.

1. Sitting and Reading
2. Watching TV
3. Sitting, inactive in a public place (e.g. a theatre or a meeting)
4. As a passenger in a car for an hour without a break
5. Lying down to rest in the afternoon when circumstances permit
6. Sitting and talking to someone
7. Sitting quietly after lunch without alcohol
8. In a car, while stopped for a few minutes in traffic

If you scored:

  •  0-5 lower normal daytime sleepiness
  •  6-10 normal daytime sleepiness
  • 11-12 mild excessive daytime symptoms
  • 13-15 moderate excessive daytime symptoms
  • 16-24 severe excessive daytime symptoms
